Extractions

Our philosophy of practice is the preservation of your teeth for life. However, there are situations whereby extractions are the preferred standard of care.

Impacted wisdom teeth
3
Extractions of these teeth are carried out when there is either insufficient space for the third molars, there is an associated cyst, there is external root resorption of the adjacent tooth, or where there is an accompanying infection of the tooth. These extractions may be carried out with either a local anaesthetic alone or in combination with nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation, conscious sedation or general anaesthesia.

Severe crowding
3
Healthy teeth are sometimes extracted as part of a comprehensive orthodontic treatment plan. The specific aim is to alleviate crooked teeth, provide space and achieve a functional and aesthetic relationship between the teeth of the upper and lower jaws.

Obscene decay
3
This type of decay occurs when there has been protracted and sustained neglect of the teeth and gums. It is apparent when the extent of the decay is so severe that it has destroyed the entire crown of the tooth, and has destroyed a significant portion of the root as well.

Through a diligent home regimen and regular professional care this type of decay can usually be prevented.

Severe periodontal disease
3
In some cases of severe periodontal neglect, extraction becomes the only reasonable alternative. These cases are so horrible that an attempt at surgical regenerative therapy would do more harm than good.

Consultations

Dental consultations are advantageous in that they provide an opportunity for the patient to be educated about all conditions applicable to themselves, and to be acquainted with all the options available to them.

During a consultation, you can expect to undergo a thorough dental examination with appropriate x-rays and photographs. Specific concerns will be addressed and a detailed explanation of the risks and benefits of each available option will be discussed.

Sedation dentistry - Conscious Sedation - Sleep Dentistry

Dental anxiety is an extremely common feeling.  According to the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation in the US, 30% of the population avoid the dentist due to fear. It is safe to assume this percentage would be similar in Canada.  Being scared of a dentist can potentially be dangerous for your oral and overall health as you might delay visits to your dentist and be at risk of developing serious dental issues.

We strive to make your dental visit as comfortable as possible. We offer the following options to help alleviate the anxiety that may be associated with dental care:

Reversible sedation – nitrous oxide

Anti-anxiety agents, such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas), can help you relax during dental visits. There is immediate full recovery with reversible sedation.

Sedation dentistry / sleep dentistry

For those with dental phobia, the best method is to undergo sleep dentistry.  Sleep dentistry allows people who would normally try and avoid the dentist to enjoy a relaxing and anxiety-free dental experience. Sedation dentistry, known also by sleep dentistry, bridges the gap between fear and patient comfort. After an initial consultation, your appointment will be scheduled. You will be given a small pill to make you rest through your dental appointment. Sedation can sometimes be used in conjunction with nitrous oxide.  While you are not technically asleep, patients often describe the experience as seeming sleep-like. You should have little or no memory of the appointment, including sounds or smells.  In fact, you’ll barely remember coming to your appointment; the only proof that you’ll have that you were there, will be your beautiful smile. Throughout the entire process, your vitals will be monitored (a small electronic sensor will be placed on your fingertip which allows us to monitor your vital signs, including your blood pressure) continually by our trained dental team.

The major benefit of sleep dentistry is the ability to make people feel like their dental treatment is over within a few minutes while in actuality, the treatment may take several hours to perform.

If you or anyone you know suffers from dental anxiety or phobia, visit us at our “Toronto Dentist” and ask about the use of nitrous oxide or sleep dentistry.
