Dental Crowns and Dental Bridges

Dental crowns and dental bridges enhance the function and beauty of teeth that have been destroyed or damaged from tooth decay.

In so doing, they either recapture or surpass the strength and aesthetic of the original tooth.

The construction of a dental crown or dental bridge involves the removal of 2 - 3 mm of tooth structure around the crown of the affected teeth, the taking of an impression (mould) and the eventual cementation of a laboratory fabricated tooth that is lifelike in both appearance and function.

CEREC Crowns in One-Visit

Cerec crowns are now available at our Toronto dental office!

With CEREC technology, we can make porcelain crowns, porcelain veneers,
inlays and onlays in just one appointment, while you wait ! This not only
saves you time but also eliminates the potential discomfort and
inconvenience of losing a temporary.

The restoration is designed on a computer screen using virtual data and
diamond coated instruments mill a ceramic block to reproduce the final
restoration. All Cerec crowns and restorations are milled out of pure
porcelain, so there is no metal in them. After polishing, the new
restoration will fit perfectly.

GREAT LOOK, GREAT FIT, GREAT COMFORT and EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY.

Dentures

Dentures represent one alternative for aesthetic teeth replacement therapy. They serve to re-establish both form and function when the natural dentition has been lost. In so doing, dentures serve to restore and preserve the natural facial harmony and tissue integrity while preventing facial implosion.

Modern denture placement often is accompanied by implant therapy. By implanting roots into the jaw, implants serve to anchor both partial and full dentures.

This combination of implant dentistry and denture therapy has significant advantages over dentures alone, in that bone resorbtion (i.e. the melting away of bone from the pressure and abrasion of the denture) is arrested, and bone regeneration often occurs. The patient therefore retains a more youthful appearance and the dentures, due to increased stability, behave more like real teeth.

Hygiene
Hygiene Services

Preventative maintenance is the cornerstone of any respectable dental treatment plan. During the last 20 years, research has shown that the primary cause of tooth loss is no longer tooth decay but gum disease. As such, we have focused our attention on the periodontal health of our patients by instituting a non-surgical soft tissue management program to allow for early detection and treatment of periodontal infection.

This includes:

· De-plaquing, scaling and root planing of the teeth roots
· Irrigation with bacterialcidal solutions below the gums
· Desensitization of the teeth roots
· Polishing of the teeth
· Fluoride Treatments
· Regular re-care intervals that are patient specific

Periodontal Surgery Before

Periodontal Surgery After

Periodontal Surgery

Where necessary, we have incorporated surgical regenerative treatments of the periodontium (gums) including both bone and soft tissue regeneration.

The specific services are itemized as follows:

· Connective tissue grafting to replace soft tissue that has been scrubbed away by overly aggressive brushing or aging

· Guided bone regeneration to regrow lost bone and connective tissue thus saving the individual from certain tooth loss

Extractions

Extractions

Our philosophy of practice is the preservation of your teeth for life. However, there are situations whereby extractions are the preferred standard of care.

Impacted wisdom teeth

Extractions of these teeth are carried out when there is either insufficient space for the third molars, there is an associated cyst, there is external root resorption of the adjacent tooth, or where there is an accompanying infection of the tooth. These extractions may be carried out with either a local anaesthetic alone or in combination with nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation, conscious sedation or general anaesthesia.

Severe crowding

Healthy teeth are sometimes extracted as part of a comprehensive orthodontic treatment plan. The specific aim is to alleviate crooked teeth, provide space and achieve a functional and aesthetic relationship between the teeth of the upper and lower jaws.

Obscene decay

This type of decay occurs when there has been protracted and sustained neglect of the teeth and gums. It is apparent when the extent of the decay is so severe that it has destroyed the entire crown of the tooth, and has destroyed a significant portion of the root as well.

Through a diligent home regimen and regular professional care this type of decay can usually be prevented.

Severe periodontal disease

In some cases of severe periodontal neglect, extraction becomes the only reasonable alternative. These cases are so horrible that an attempt at surgical regenerative therapy would do more harm than good.

Conscious Sedation

Conscious Sedation

We strive to make your dental visit as comfortable as possible. We offer the following options to help alleviate the anxiety that may be associated with dental care:

Reversible sedation

Anti-anxiety agents, such as nitrous oxide, can help you relax during dental visits. There is immediate full recovery with reversible sedation.

Conscious sedation

Sedation dentistry bridges the gap between fear and patient comfort. After an initial consultation, your appointment will be scheduled. You are given a small pill to make you rest through your dental appointment. Even though you are not technically unconscious, you are asleep. You will have little or no memory of the appointment, including sounds or smells. During the entire appointment, you will be monitored (a small electronic sensor will be placed on your fingertip which allows us to monitor your vital signs, including your blood pressure) continually by our trained dental team.

Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is indicated when the decay has extended into the pulp chamber and infected the nerve of the tooth. It is often the laymen's false perception that root canal therapy is painful.

The truth is that when properly applied, root canal therapy removes the pain caused by pulpal infection, thereby creating a contented and pain free patient.

Pediatric Dentistry

Pediatric Dentistry

Pediatric Dentistry can be the single most rewarding group of patients to treat. The key to creating an entirely positive experience for the child is to alleviate their fear of the unknown. This is accomplished through excellent communication with the child and by informing them of each procedure before it is performed, thereby earning their trust and respect.

Childen should come in for an orientation around age 3 when all the primary teeth are in the mouth. Visits should then occur at regular six-month intervals. This early start can prevent any major problems from developing.

In the event that a child requires basic or extensive restorative care, this can be accomplished easily and without significant discomfort with the use of conscious sedation.

Digital Radiography

Digital Radiography

Digital Radiography is a type of x-ray that uses a small sensor instead of the film used in conventional x-rays. The sensor transmits the image to a computer monitor.

Advantages of digital radiography over conventional x-rays include: less radiation exposure, enhanced patient education and faster dental procedures.

Panoramic Radiography
Panoramic Radiograph

Panoramic Radiography

Panoramic radiographs serve as a useful tool in screening for many ailments of the head and neck. These include:

· Dental cysts
· Fractured jaws
· Impacted wisdom teeth
· Extra teeth
· Missing teeth
· Assessing crowded teeth
· Orthodontic assessments
· Implant assessments
· Nerve proximity
· Tooth decay
· Periodontal disease
· TMJ - Temporo-mandibular joint disease
· Oral Cancer

Sealants

Sealants

The most important reason for getting sealants is to avoid tooth decay. Sealants are thin, plastic coatings painted on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, thereby removing the home where plaque often reside. Getting sealants put on is simple and painless.

Children should get sealants on their permanent molars as soon as the teeth come in - before decay attacks the teeth. The first permanent molars come in between the ages of 5 and 7. The second permanent molars come in when a child is between 11 and 14 years old. Other teeth with pits and grooves also might need to be sealed. Teenagers and young adults who are prone to decay may also benefit from sealants.

Fluoride

Fluoride

Discovered in the 1960's, fluoride represents another inexpensive method of preventing tooth decay. Fluorides act by replacing a water soluble hydroxyl group on the enamel crystal with a fluoride group, thereby rendering the enamel crystal of which the teeth are made, insoluble in acid.

Fluoridation of the teeth may be from topical application during a cleaning appointment, the use of fluoride toothpastes, the fluoride in your drinking water or the fluoride in some mouthwashes. All of these serve to strengthen the teeth against the acid excreted by bacteria.

Mouth Guards

Mouth Guards

Imagine what it would be like to be missing one or two (or more) of your front teeth. Suddenly, the confidence with which you smile, speak and eat would be significantly affected.

The use of a properly fitted mouthguard has proved itself invaluable in the prevention of numerous injuries to the mouth for several decades. Mouthguards work by helping to cushion the blows that might otherwise cause chipped or broken teeth, nerve damage, or even tooth loss.

Bruxism Splints

Bruxism Splints (Night Guard)

Bruxism (grinding your teeth) is a harmful dental habit that results in the rapid destruction of the enamel and dentin on the biting surface of the teeth. The results of this destruction include; tooth decay, periodontal disease, TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint disease), pulpal infection and eventually tooth loss.

It usually occurs unbeknownst to the patient during sleep and is usually the result of stress imbalance in one's life.

Bruxism splints consist of a hard clear acrylic material that covers either the upper or lower biting surfaces of the teeth, thereby offsetting the grinding of the natural tooth surface. It is usually worn during sleep, but in severe cases is worn at all times except during meals.
